Today, I thought I would update my blog, which I had meant to do for some time. The summer is winding down and has almost passed us by. As the commercial says on teevee, it’s the most wonderful time of the year – that being, back to school for the boys. Enough reminiscing.
The last time I tackled a tile job, I was young and rammy. Now, I am old and I suppose, less rammy? I cannot give an objective opinion on that, nor subjective. Best to say I still know how to ram, whatever that means. Anyway, that tile job I tackled some 30 years ago, I had slopped so much mastic everywhere I spent way more time cleaning that rock hard stuff off of the walls and in between the tiles, because the grout has to go there, that I vowed to never to do tile work again. Now, 30 years later I have adopted a Zen mentality to much of what I do and definitely to anything that requires a modicum of craftsmanship.

This was a big job for me, to be sure. From making absolutely sure all the cement board was installed correctly and the shower walls sound insulated, all the aquaboard properly secured, I thought just the prep work would never end. Now I can step back and have a proud gaze at my work and look forward to the grouting. Did I mention I tried to do a tile job 30 years ago? If I did, I also screwed up the grout too, and spent a couple of days chiseling off cured, carbide hard grout.
If you have a daunting tile job waiting for you, it’s not that hard. Two things are essential though. One is a good quality wet tile saw. And, two, the ability to read, understand and follow directions. There are numerous resources available on line and at retailers of ceramic tiles and supplies. If you want things to go smooth, bone up on methods of work , best practices and how not to be rammy, or how to be, whatever the case may be.

There are a couple of places where I need to add some spacers/tiles/finishing touches. Like: under the step into the shower, the chair rail that will go above the accent stipe on three of the bathroom walls, and in the shower where the
mixing valve and shower head poke through the wall. One more thing, there is a glass shower door with chrome, not aluminum, mounting strips and hardware yet to be installed. Painting and completion should be in two more weeks.
